The fishing ban in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, was lifted on Friday night after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) certified that marine products in the area are safe for human consumption.
Calapan city administrator Raymund Ussam cited BFAR tests on water samples in Calapan in a radio interview, claiming that the water is safe for fishing despite the oil slick from the sunken MT Princess Empress.
Humerlito Dolor, the governor of Oriental Mindoro, confirmed on Friday that the oil spill had reached Calapan.
According to him, the city's impact from the oil slick is minimal.
Caritas Philippines, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' social action and development arm, urged the government and other stakeholders to prioritize the needs of residents affected by the oil spill.
