More than 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Surigao del Sur, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Spokesperson Edgar Posadas confirmed on Monday, Dec. 4.

In an interview during DZRH Dos Por Dos, Posada said they recorded a total of 1,683 aftershocks from Dec. 2 to 6 AM of Dec. 4.

"Labing-walo dito ang naramdaman, kanina ang pinaka-malakas ay yung [magnitude] 6.6. Wala naman tsunami alert kanina," he added.

According to Posadas, the strong earthquake affected 2,647 individuals or 529 families, and damaged 221 houses.

He said one reportedly died in Davao del Norte and this is still under confirmation, while four others sustained injuries.

The local government units and NDRRMC regional offices are presently conducting rapid damage assessments, the NDRRMC Spokesperson said.

Posadas said the quake hardly hit the Municipality of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur.

"Base sa initial na ulat, mabuti at offshore [tumama ang lindol]. Hindi sya sa lupa kundi sa dagat. Nagkaroon din ng maliliit na tsunami pero natapos din kahapon ng 3 AM [ng Dec. 3]," he cotinued.

In an interview during DZRH Magandang Umaga Pilipinas, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol warned that the aftershocks associated with the magnitude 7.4 earthquake will last for several days.

"Medyo tatagal ito. Again, sinasabi natin it will last a several days," Bacolcol said.
