Amid the tensions over former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest, members of the House Quad Committee highlighted that the discussion is about seeking justice for the victims of the extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
After Duterte’s arrest on Tuesday, House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong explained the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision was brought about the crimes against humanity that happened during the Duterte administration.
The report by RH 12 Milky Rigonan stated the lawmaker warned of painting the former president as the victim, as the case surrounding the war on drugs had been a long battle between the administration and the victims and families of the EJKs.
This turnout, as Adiong described, is a victory in their actions to ensure accountability with officials. He also noted that this fight is centered on seeking justice for the tokhang victims.
Meanwhile, House Assistant Majority Leader and Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre, pointed out that the Duterte camp is attempting to reverse the ICC’s decision. However, the lawmaker assured that they cannot escape the law.
He furthered that the ICC’s arrest warrant is a discussion on accountability.
The Quad Committee played a significant role in unearthing the implementation of the Davao model, from a provincial to a national scale. During its hearings last year, the Committee leaders grilled the former president and former police officials about the rewards system and the comprehensive outline of how officials operated across the government sectors.
In a recent social media update by Senator Bong Go, he shared that Duterte is currently in Dubai, and is accompanied by former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
