Legal counsel for Veronica "Kitty" Duterte filed an urgent motion with the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday, demanding the immediate resolution of the habeas corpus petitions that seek to compel the government to bring former President Rodrigo Duterte home from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Duterte was transferred to the ICC in The Hague on March 12 to face charges of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign.
The Panelo Law Office cited the SC's more than 200 days of "inaction" since its last action in April, arguing that the delay denies liberty and "diminishes public faith in the judiciary."
The petition stresses that urgent judicial intervention is necessary to prevent the former President's health from deteriorating further and to avoid his "undignified demise on foreign soil."
Duterte's lawyers asserted that the government is capable of securing his return through diplomatic means, citing the case of expelled lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr. as precedent.
They also warned of potential further executive moves to surrender other ICC-implicated officials, such as Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa.
