Navotas' lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco is urging a change in leadership for the House Majority and Minority, as well as the Deputy Majority and Minority, as House Speaker Martin Romualdez is set to resign from his post on Wednesday afternoon, September 17.

RH Milky Rigonan reported that Tiangco emphasized that the change in leadership for the said posts should include the chairmanship of crucial committees.

“Tulad ng sinabi ko sa previous interviews. Sa tingin ko, in my own humble opinion..kung magpapalit ng [liderato sa Kamara], hindi pwedeng papalitan lang ‘yung Speaker,” Tiangco said in an ambush interview with reporters.

“Dapat kung magpapalit, pati ‘yung mga Deputy Speaker at tyaka ‘yung sensitive committees lang. Hindi natin kaya sa tingin ko ngayon, na palitan lahat ng committee chairman kasi masyadong magulo,” he added.

Despite this, Tiangco clarified that he is not aiming for Speakership, including being appointed as chairman of the Committee on Appropriations.

“Kahit nung tinatanong ako, hindi naman formal ‘yung offer, pero pinangungunahan ko na lang na hindi ako interesado dyan,” the lawmaker said.

Romualdez is scheduled to formally announce his resignation as House Speaker later this afternoon during the House session. He would be replaced by House Deputy Speaker and Isabela 6th District Rep. Faustino “Bodjie” Dy III.

The former’s decision to step down from his position is brought by pressure towards Congress, wherein some lawmakers had been subject to scrutiny over their alleged involvement in the anomalous flood control projects, Rigonan reported.

Amid the reported House leadership shake-up on Tuesday afternoon, Romualdez’ office was cleared of his personal and official items.
