Recently, the Philippine National Police EOD K9 Unit faced backlash after a K9 dog appeared thin during an incident in Manila, prompting concern from the public and support from an animal welfare organization, the National Police Commission (Napolcom), and several individuals.

Kobe, a Belgian Malinois K9, drew significant public attention after photos circulated on social media showing him looking thin and unwell following an operation in Tondo, Manila. After these images went viral, the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) reached out to the authorities to meet with Kobe and his team. On August 4, the Regional Explosive and Canine Unit - NCR (RECU-NCR) promptly visited the AKF office to discuss the situation.

The agency confirmed that Kobe had recently completed his training and was relocated from Taguig to Manila. According to RECU-NCR, his lab results were normal, his vaccinations were up to date, and he was being properly fed.

AKF and RECU-NCR agreed that Kobe should undergo 2-3 months of rehabilitation before his redeployment.

On August 7, columnist Ramon Tulfo, along with NAPOLCOM Commissioner Ralph Calinisan, met Kobe in person. Both gentlemen generously donated bags of dog food and financial assistance to help Kobe in his recovery.

Commissioner Calinisan also expressed his commitment to finding funding for the PNP K9 units nationwide to ensure they receive proper food and vitamins.
