33% Pinoys say quality-of-life got better than past 12 months - SWS poll
by Mary Antalan11 October 2023

Around 33% of adult Filipinos had said that their quality of life was better than twelve months before, according to the Second Quarter 2023 poll conducted by Social Weather Survey (SWS).

Aside from 33%, which is termed by SWS as "gainers", 22% are saying that their quality of life got worse, also termed as "losers".

About 45% adult Filipinos said life was the same or “unchanged” compared to a year ago.

According to social research institution, the June 2023 net gainer score was 6 points above the high +5 in March 2023.

However, it is still 7 points below the pre-pandemic level of very high +18 in December 2019.

The second quarter survey was conducted from June 28–July 1, 2023.

A total of 1,500 adults, ages 18 years old and above, participated in the said survey.

Of the total, 600 came from Balance Luzon and 300 each from Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

"Face-to-face is the standard interviewing method for Social Weather Stations; the only exceptions were early in the pandemic when movement restrictions made face-to-face impossible and mobile phone interviews were conducted. Normal face-to-face field operations resumed in November 2020," SWS said.

The social research institution said the area estimates were weighted by the Philippine Statistics Authority's (PSA) medium-population projections for 2023 to obtain the national estimates.

"The survey items reported here were non-commissioned. They were included on SWS's initiative and released as a public service, SWS noted.

Since April 1983, 149 surveys asked respondents to rate how their quality of life has changed during the previous 12 months.

The Net Gainer score was typically negative until 2015, when it began to improve.

However, with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the score began to drastically deteriorate. Although it has now started to rise again, it has not yet fully returned to its pre-pandemic levels.
