On Wednesday morning, several supporters, personalities, and groups gathered at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City to commemorate and honor the legacy of the late senator, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
His 41st death anniversary was observed by supporters and various groups, including the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the August Twenty One Movement (ATOM), amid the controversy surrounding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to move the holiday from August 21 to August 23.
The event commenced with the wreath-laying ceremony at NAIA to commemorate the late senator’s assasination. Groups departed NAIA Terminal 1 to participate in the “Ride On Against Revision of History”, a motorcade arranged by ATOM—from Baclaran Church to the Manila Memorial Park where he is buried.
At the Manila Memorial Park a memorial mass organized by Tindig Pilipinas was held, where several relatives and friends attended.
Aquino played a significant role in fighting for the nation’s freedom and democracy. His assassination at the Manila airport in 1983 led to the EDSA People Power Revolution, where the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was ousted.
On August 15, the President issued Proclamation No. 655, moving the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21 to August 23 to ‘promote domestic tourism in the country’.
