President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed that no one will be spared in the ongoing investigation into alleged anomalies in flood control projects, stressing that even his cousin, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, and other political allies will not be exempt.

In a press conference on Monday, Marcos said the independent commission tasked to look into the scandal will pursue all leads, including allegations linking Romualdez and former House appropriations committee chair Zaldy Co to supposed kickbacks from public works projects.

“Well, there’s only one way to do it: They will not be spared,” Marcos said.

“Anybody will see, wala tayong kinikilingan, wala tayong tinutulungan. Wala namang maniniwala sa’yo hangga’t gawin mo. So gagawin namin,” he added.

At the third Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on alleged flood control anomalies, contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya named several lawmakers and officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), accusing them of receiving kickbacks from government projects awarded to their firms.

The controversy stems from revelations made by Discaya couple, who alleged that a 30 percent kickbacks was routinely siphoned off from flood control project funds. According to their claims, the biggest cuts went to Speaker Romualdez and Rep. Zaldy Co.

Romualdez has strongly denied the accusations, insisting he had never profited from government infrastructure projects.

In action, the President has created an Independent Commission on Infrastracture (ICI) to investigate the alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

Moreover, Marcos doubles down on his promise of impartiality, the findings of the independent probe are expected to set the tone for his administration’s anti-corruption drive.
