Outgoing Vice President Leni Robredo will be stepping down as chair of the opposition Liberal Party after her term ends on June 30, her spokesperson Barry Gutierrez confirmed Tuesday.
"The moment that her term ends, she will automatically stop being chairperson of the Liberal Party. That’s clear," Gutierrez said in a television interview.
However, it remains unclear if Robredo, who ran as an independent candidate during the presidential race, will resign from the Liberal Party.
When asked about Robredo’s plan, Gutierrez said they are currently discussing how to proceed with the Angat Buhay non-government organization that she earlier announced would be launched on July 1.
"I think she would prefer to be in Bicol. That’s really her home and she feels most comfortable there," he said when asked if Robredo will stay in Manila or return to her hometown in Camarines Sur.
"But you know, because obviously, if she will be pursuing advocacies through a non-government organization – that will probably be one of the biggest volunteer-driven initiatives we will be seeing in our country – then at the minimum, she will have to spend some of her time in Manila and in other places. So, we’ll see. That’s something that I think she will have to decide on," he added.
The Vice President recently arrived in Manila from a two-week vacation in the United States where she attended her youngest daughter Jillian’s graduation from New York University.
Based on the tally of the Congress, which sits as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), Robredo trailed behind President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in the presidential race with over 15 million votes as compared to the former senator’s 31 million votes.
