Senator Ramon 'Bong' Revilla filed a resolution that urges a Senate panel to investigate in aid of legislation the alleged leak of personal records from the database of the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and other government agencies.
In filing Senate Resolution No. 573, Revilla said "data breaches in government records may lead to potential national security issues."
"If unabated, the exposed data may lead to nefarious transactions such as criminals taking advantage of the leaked data to blackmail and threaten law enforcers," he added.
According to the Senator, since this is a national interest, the higher chamber should enact responsive policies to avert potential data breaches in the future.
Last April 18, VPNMentor, a cybersecurity research firm reported that more than one million data were leaked from law enforcement and government agencies.
It said that the information included copies of the individual's fingerprint scans, TIN numbers, Birth certificates, and passports.
Following the report, the NBI, BIR, and Civil Service Commission (CSC) declared that there was no data breach in their systems.
