Two rent-a-car owners have filed a complaint against a 30-year-old woman from Kalinga for operating a “rent-sangla” scam.
In a report by RH 41 Romeo Gonzales, the complaint arose after the woman allegedly rented six vehicles, which she later pawned or sub-leased to other individuals in Tabuk City, Kalinga.
According to the Highway Patrol Group Kalinga (HPG-Kalinga), their group was alerted to a possible "rent-sangla" or "rent-tangay" scheme involving the said woman after they were contacted regarding the matter on August 19.
The car owners from Cauayan, Isabela, said they became suspicious after seeing an alarming post in a Facebook group for rent-a-car businesses, warning others about a certain 30-year-old woman identified as “Mary”.
The victims attempted to contact the suspect but were unsuccessful, prompting them to seek assistance from HPG-Kalinga to recover their vehicles.
Authorities immediately launched a tracking operation, during which four out of the six vehicles were quickly recovered, with the cooperation of the individuals who had them.
HPG-Kalinga described the suspect's actions as alarming, noting that most of her transactions involved pawning the rented vehicles that put the owners at risk of losing their property.
Moreover, authorities are now waiting for the victims to file formal charges, allowing a warrant of arrest to be issued and preventing similar incidents from happening again.
