Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a parallel investigation on the death of the third-year Chemical Engineering student from Adamson University, who is allegedly a victim of fraternity hazing.
"Yes, the Secretary has already asked NBI to conduct a parallel probe into the alleged hazing death. We hope to shed light on this issue," spokesperson Mico Clavano said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He said the justice department condemned any acts that violate Republic Act No. 11053 or the Anti-Hazing law.
Clavano assured that any cases to be filed before the DOJ will undergo "diligent evaluation."
"If probable cause with reasonable certainty of conviction is found, we will prosecute the case until the perpetrators of this crime are finally brought to justice," he added.
On Tuesday, the Cavite Police discovered the remains of John Matthew Salilig at a vacant lot in a subdivision in Malagasang, Imus City, a week after he was reported missing.
Cavite Police officer-in-charge (OIC) Michael Batoctoy said they were able to locate the victim's body after a witness gave the exact location.
Fifteen persons of interest were tagged in the brutal death of Salilig, the Philippine National Police said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Adamson University has announced that it has conducted its own investigation and has cooperated with the authorities on the death of Salilig.
Interior Secretary Benjamin 'Benhur' Abalos Jr. also said that he will also order a probe into the Adamson student's killing.
"Paiimbestigahan agad natin ito at a alamin ang mga circumstances nito. Any forms of violence na namamatay, paiimbestigahan agad natin," he told reporters in a chance interview.
