House Deputy Speaker Ralph Recto called on Friday the disclosure of four new Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites under the Marcos administration's plan on increasing access of American soldiers to Philippine military bases.
“As the number of EDCA bases mutate into nine, the administration should brief Congress and tell the public on where these additional four will be,” Recto said in a statement after two countries agreed to add four more sites from the first five announced.
While he supports the agreement, the deputy speaker also urges the President to release an explanation regarding its benefits and effects on the Philippines to be publicized.
“In principle, this is an administration prerogative I support. But I ask that whatever agreements be made public and the pros and cons are told,” he said.
“What are the benefits that we as a nation will gain from the EDCA 9? Panalo ba ang bayan diyan? At ano naman kaya ang maaring perwisyo, kung meron man?” he added.
Recto also asked defense officials to thoroughly study the consequences and other parts of the agreement.
"By agreeing to EDCA plus, Defense officials would have first studied its ramifications, specifically the potential reaction from other states, and our planned responses,” he underlined.
