The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II arrived on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the official residence of the British Royal family in Scotland, marking the first leg of her final journey.

The coffin arrived after 6 hours of travel from the Queen’s home at Balmoral Castle, Scotland where she peacefully died.

Thousands of mourners have gathered in the Holyroodhouse Palace and paid their respect and farewell to her Majesty, the Queen.

According to the Royal Family’s statement shared on its official website, the coffin will rest in the Throne room at the Holyroodhouse Palace until Monday afternoon, Sept. 12 before it will be moved to St. Gile’s Cathedral in Scotland.

“[A] Procession will be formed on the forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodhouse to convey the Coffin to St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh. The King and Members of the Royal Family will take part in the Procession and attend a Service in St Giles’ Cathedral to receive the Coffin,“ the statement reads.

It added that once the Queen’s coffin is settled in St Giles’ Cathedral guarded by vigils from the Royal Company of Archers, members of the Scottish community will be allowed to visit and pay their respect to the Majesty, the Queen.

Next plans for the Queen’s funeral

After the 24-hour state funeral in Scotland, earlier reports said that the Queen’s coffin will be moved to London and into Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening, Sept. 13. The Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne will accompany the journey.

The following day, Sept. 14, the coffin will then be taken into a procession by the Royal Family members into Westminster Hall where the Queen will lie in state for four consecutive days.

On the morning of Sept. 19, the Queen’s coffin will then travel in procession to Westminster Abbey and will be moved to Wellington Arch to Windsor.

Once in Windsor, the State Hearse will travel to St George’s Chapel for a committal service.

St George Chapel marks the final destination of Queen Elizabeth where she will rest next to her late husband Prince Philip, his father King George VI, and Queen Mother Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning Monarch in British history, died on Thursday, Sept. 8, at age of 96.

According to Buckingham Palace in earlier reports, she was suffering "episodic mobility problems" since the last months of 2021.
