President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. will attend the 40th and 41st Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from Nov. 10 to 13, Malacanang announced on Friday.
In a press briefing, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Assistant Secretary to ASEAN Daniel Espiritu said Marcos would discuss his administration’s priorities during the summit.
These include post-pandemic economic recovery and transformation, food security, energy security, digital transformation, and the digital economy as well as climate change.
Three cabinet members will join the President namely Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo, DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo, and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.
As per Marcos’ bilateral meeting with world leaders on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, DFA Assistant Secretary Nathaniel Imperial said they are still finalizing the details.
But he said Marcos is scheduled to meet with the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen "as a matter of courtesy."
The President is also expected to meet with Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
"As you know, the Republic of Korea is the key partner of the Philippines — economically and in terms of security and also tourism. We have a multi-faceted relationship with the Republic of Korea," Imperial said.
He said that among the topics that Marcos and Suk Yeol would discuss include the conclusion of the free trade agreement and the defense and security cooperation between the two countries.
Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) officer-in-charge Cheloy Garafil also said Marcos would visit Filipino communities in Cambodia to provide them updates on his administration’s programs and policies, especially on the protection of the rights of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
After the ASEAN, DFA officials said Marcos is set to attend the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2022 in Thailand and the ASEAN European Union (EU) in Brussels, Belgium both scheduled this November.
