President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. met the lawmakers of the United States Congressional Delegation in Malacañang on Thursday, Aug. 18.
In a Facebook post, Marcos expressed his hope to strengthen the country’s relationship with the US in various fields.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with the US in the areas of renewable energy use, agricultural development, economic reform, and mitigation of drug problem,” he wrote.
The US Congressional Delegation is headed by Senator Edward J. Markey who also visited Taiwan last Aug. 15.
The senators had planned to visit former senator Leila de Lima who is a detainee in Camp Crame but was barred by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
According to the PNP, such interaction without permission from concerned judicial authorities is not allowed.
It added that they denied the senators' visit due to consideration of the prevailing COVID-19 situation in custody as there are 15 active cases.
