The extensive damages sustained by the Manila Central Post Office can be covered by its ₱604 million insurance, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) said on Tuesday.
According to President and General Manager Wick Veloso, the post office can receive ₱400 million for the recovery of its structural damages and ₱200 million for its furtniture and fixtures.
He said GSIS officials have already been deployed to conduct an assessment of how much insurance the post office can claim.
"They are putting up a drone to be able to assess the damage. Kapag nakapagbigay ng report ang ating adjuster, which is expected to be in 24 to 48-hour period. It will take them two weeks to be able to assess," Veloso said.
Once the assessment report is received, the GSIS President said they will immediately release the insurance fund to the Philippine post.
Meanwhile, Veloso said the employees of the burned post office could be transferred to GSIS' foreclosed warehouse located in Pasig to ensure that "their services won't be disrupted."
"Plug and play po ito at maari nilang ituloy ang serbisyo," he added.
After 30 hours since the blaze started to engulf the post office on Sunday evening, a fire out was only declared at 6:33 AM on Tuesday. Eighteen individuals were reportedly hurt.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) - National Capital Region (NCR) Chief Supt. Nahum Tarroza earlier told DZRH that the estimated damage due to the fire cost around ₱300 to ₱500 million.
As of this writing, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
