The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both of his lungs.
"Laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture," the Vatican said.
Pope Francis has been hospitalized since Friday for treatment of bronchitis and to undergo additional diagnostic tests.
He was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic after it was announced that the Holy Father had been battling bronchitis for several days.
In a recent update, the Vatican stated that the Pope has developed a 'polymicrobial infection' on top of his existing bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis. The condition, which requires cortisone and antibiotic therapy, has made his treatment more complex.
A follow-up chest CT scan revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating further pharmacological treatment.
"Nevertheless, Pope Francis remains in good spirits," the Vatican added.
While in the hospital, the Pope received the Eucharist and spent the day alternating between rest, prayer, and reading.
The Pope has conveyed his gratitude for the support he has received and asked for continued prayers.
