Following the reported sexual assault on campus last week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is willing to deploy police personnel for beat patrol at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, if the university agrees.
PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said in an interview that the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) could deploy police personnel for mobile patrol to protect students, faculty members, and visitors.
Fajardo stated that the PNP is eager to work with the UP administration to ensure adequate protection for one of the country's leading universities.
The UP has autonomy in that state security forces must obtain permission before entering its campuses. Its police force is also separate from the PNP.
Fajardo explained that if the UP grants them access, the QCPD could dispatch police personnel to perform normal patrol operations on campus.
She added that the PNP can deploy mobile patrols, particularly during busy hours.
The problem of security at UP Diliman arose after a female fifth-year student was allegedly sexually raped at knifepoint on the campus on the evening of July 1.
