The Philippine National Police (PNP) has now arrested the 17 individuals believed to be responsible for setting a container truck ablaze while protesting along Ayala Bridge.

In a statement, the PNP said that the said people are now in the custody of the Manila Police District (MPD), and that firefighters and police personnel immediately responded, making the situation now contained.

“Appropriate charges are being readied for filing against those involved,” the PNP’s statement read. “We respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly, but we strongly appeal to everyone to remain calm and refrain from violence.”

According to the PNP, such actions endanger the lives of people and undermine the message of those who wish to protest peacefully.

Amidst that, the PNP assured that it would remain committed to safeguarding both the public and demonstrators. Police personnel would continue to exercise maximum tolerance, but will, however, act against anyone who would cause harm or damage to property.

“Rest assured, those responsible for these acts will be held accountable under the law,” the statement ended.

RH Edniel Parrosa also reported that around 15,000 people from various parts of Metro Manila have participated in the said demonstrations, based on the PNP’s Camp Crame monitor. Moreover, he reported that the biggest crowd count was seen at Luneta Park.

Protesters will soon march to Mendiola, before heading to EDSA Shrine, where more people are expected to join.

In an earlier report, tensions rose during the rally at Ayala corner Romualez, Mendiola, after incidents of stone-throwing and setting a container truck on fire were reported. According to the PNP, around 300 to 400 people gathered at the said area.
