A container van was torched at Ayala Bridge during the Sunday rallies, which were peaceful up until this point.
Men, mainly youth in black, and with their faces obscured by masks and scarves, flocked to the container van after attempting to get a rise out of anti-riot police by throwing objects like barriers at them.
Dancing with arms held above their heads to chants like “F*ck the system!” the young men waved the Philippine flag alongside a black flag emblazoned with a grinning skull and crossbones sporting a straw hat—the Jolly Roger flag from the celebrated manga One Piece, which has come to symbolize defiance and aggression among Gen Z protesters around the globe, from Indonesia to Nepal to Paris, according to a report.
The truck body bore such phrases as “Kontra-korap” and “F*ck the corrupt” as well as other vulgarities and indecipherable writing. Its wheels were set on fire and protesters threw items into the quickly growing blaze, such as sticks and cardboard, possibly to fuel the flames. They also tossed in a motorcycle parked nearby.
Meanwhile, from the other side of the container van, someone was blasting the fire with water despite the thick plumes of black smoke.
Eventually, the anti-riot police chased after the men and caught several of them. They were lined up on the sidewalk, their hands cuffed behind their backs.
Earlier, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla described the rallies as “generally peaceful.”
