Acting Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., is reportedly considering removing Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo as the PNP’s spokesperson, according to RH Edniel Parrosa.
Fajardo has served as the voice of Camp Crame since 2022, but Nartatez now questions the need for a separate spokesperson when the role, he says, should fall under the Public Information Office (PIO).
“In the national headquarters, ang magsasalita is the Chief PNP and the Spokesperson. And ‘yung spokesperson, the PIO for example, nandiyan na sa kanila lahat ‘yon, so all the repository of reports ay nandiyan sa kaniya and hinihimay niya ‘yon so that it will be ready [for] the public, katulad niyo [reporters] kung mayroon kayong itatanong,” Nartatez explained.
“Bakit mayroon pa tayong [hiwalay na] spokesperson? He’s the spokesperson,” he added, referring to PIO chief PBGen Randulf Tuaño.
Fajardo, who is also a lawyer, has been serving as a spokesperson for the police force since 2022 during the tenure of former PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos.
No final decision has been announced, but the remarks suggest a potential restructuring of the PNP’s public communication approach.
