The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured the public that it remains on guard against potential security threats in connection with the series of transport strikes and nationwide protests leading up to the Sept. 21 rallies, as reported by RH Edniel Parrosa
Police authorities are also closely monitoring the planned three-day strike of the transport group MANIBELA, set to begin tomorrow, followed by the nationwide protest of PISTON scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 18.
These demonstrations come just days before the major Sept. 21 program on Sunday, commemorating the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.
Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said security forces are keeping a close eye on reports of harassment against drivers who may choose to continue operating despite the strike.
He also noted that they are monitoring possible convergence points in urban areas, where large gatherings are expected to take place.
Nartatez has directed ground commanders to coordinate with local government units to assist commuters affected by the strikes. Police mobility assets are on standby to provide support when necessary.
On the question of raising a full alert status, the PNP Public Information Office clarified that the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is currently on heightened alert.
However, the status is expected to be raised to full alert by Sept. 21 to prepare for the rallies and other mass actions.
Both the AFP and PNP reiterated their readiness to ensure peace and order during the series of protests, assuring the public that security personnel will be deployed strategically to safeguard commuters, motorists, and demonstrators alike.
