Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Nicolas Torre III expressed his dismay at Diehard Duterte Supporters (DDS) for using ‘fake news’ as propaganda and as a tactic to divert public attention. This was during a press conference held at Camp Crame on Monday, July 21.
In his statement, Gen. Torre said that some groups aligned with the DDS have been increasingly engaging in misinformation campaigns, which appear to be a tactic to stay politically relevant despite the waning of pressing public controversies linked to the former administration.
After a 2022 video showing the body of a Chinese national found in Kawit, Cavite went viral again, PNP Chief Torre addressed this concerning trend as ‘fake news’ perpetrated by the DDS.
“Halimbawa ito ng paghalukay ng mga DDS sa mga nakalipas na isyu. Wala nang maipukol ang mga DDS na kasing lala ng nakalipas na administrasyon,” said Torre.
“Bakit pinapalabas na parang nangyari ito na kahapon lamang?” Torre added, referring to the issue that continues to circulate on social media.
Aside from this issue, Torre also addressed the recent advisory released by China’s Ministry of Education, warning their students of security risks if they choose to study in the Philippines.
Gen. Torre reiterated to the public that the advisory lacks any security risk basis, even pointing out that the recent criminal cases in the country involve Chinese nationals.
Torre is known for his strict leadership style and spreading false information is among the things he strongly opposes.
