Police General Jose Melencio Corpuz Nartatez Jr. is set to become the new Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), according to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Nartatez will replace Police General Nicolas D. Torre III, who was relieved from his post without prior announcement from the Palace. The sudden leadership change comes just days after Torre publicly expressed frustration over what he described as external interference in police affairs.
In a statement before his removal, Torre said there were individuals meddling in the internal matters of the PNP, a remark that has since raised questions about possible political or institutional pressure behind the shake-up.
The DILG has yet to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding Torre’s relief or the official turnover proceedings. As of press time, Malacañang has not issued a formal announcement regarding the appointment.
