Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island has recorded the highest volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) this year, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) reported on Monday.
In an advisory issued at 7 am on Monday, the state volcanologist said Mt. Kanlaon emitted 1,099 tonnes of volcanic sulfur dioxide a day, which is almost higher than the average of 124 tonnes a day in March.
Apart from the sulfur, it also said that from April 1 to April 30, it recorded 141 volcanic earthquakes.
"These earthquakes occurred at shallow depths to depths of 10 kilometers across the northern to western portions of the edifice," PHIVOLCS said.
The state seismologist said that Mount Kanlaon is presently placed under Alert Level 1.
The agency then advised the public and the local government units (LGUs) to remain vigilant and refrain from entering the Volcano's four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
"Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft," it said.
