The Philippines is set to export durian fruit to China with an initial 7,500 metric tons in March of this year.

"The agency [Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Plant Industry] said there is an initial volume of 7,500 metric tons of durians ready to be sent to the Asian country, which will be sourced from 59 different farmers or producers covering some 400 hectares of production area," Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Garafil confirmed in a statement.

The Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) reported the exportation during their meeting at Malacañang Palace with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

In January, Marcos visited China, where he signed a USD2-billion fruit export deal effective between Manila and Beijing.

This initiative was to increase the exportation of valuable agricultural products in the Philippines.

Protocol of the Phytosanitary Requirements for Export of Fresh Durians from the Philippines to China was signed by the DA and China’s General Administration of Customs on Jan 4 — opening up an estimated 50,000 metric tons of fresh durian.
