In light of Indonesia's President-elect Prabowo Subianto's visit to the country, the government is pursuing stronger connections between the Philippines and Indonesia.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed Subianto to Malacañang on Friday, September 20, marking the first visit of the new foreign leader to the Philippines, which is seen as a sign of the growing relationship between the two nations.
“I think your visit here today will certainly bring a new impetus to making that relationship between Indonesia and the Philippines stronger and bigger,” Marcos said.
The Indonesian leader reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the ties between Indonesia and the Philippines.
“I came here today to pay my respects because exactly one month from now on [the] 20th October, God willing, I’m going to be inaugurated as President of the Republic of Indonesia and perhaps it’s the Asian way, our custom before, we enter into a new position, we call on our friends,” Subianto said.
The Philippines and Indonesia established diplomatic relations on November 24, 1949. This year, the two countries will celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
