MANILA – A group of Filipino-Chinese businessmen expressed concern over rising tensions between the Philippines and China, and calls for “mutual respect” on both sides.
In a public statement released by the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) and other Filipino-Chinese business and civic organizations, it expressed its support for President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s call for diplomacy in handling the ongoing dispute in the West Philippine Sea.
“We endorse his desire for a peaceful resolution of the foregoing, to choose earnest dialogue, and pray for a de-escalation of tensions between our two countries,” the statement read.
Marcos earlier said that the Philippines is “not in the business of instigating wars” and will always aim to settle disputes peacefully.”
This is after Philippine Navy personnel and Chinese coast guard clashed during a routine rotation and resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal last June 17, damaging Philippine Navy vessels and injuring personnel, one of which sustained severe injury.
The group also appealed to both governments of China and the Philippines to consider paths that will safeguard the peace, order and safety of both countries and its peoples.
“Instead of conflict, let us choose stability. In these tumultuous times, with rising tensions in other parts of the world, let us not risk the unity that has prevailed in our Asian region for hundreds of years,” the statement added.
The FFCCCII emphasized that it values “friendly relations” between the two countries that span generations, connected by cultural affinities, family ties, and substantial economic partnerships.
“Together we endured the trials of World War II and remained allies in many ways. Our nations have consistently showcased the manifold benefits of mutual respect. As such, we implore both sides to refrain from actions or declarations that will only fuel the already precarious situation,” FFCCCII added.
Meanwhile, the group proposed the establishment of a “neutral and diplomatic venue for discussion that will uphold mutual respect for one another” to protect the sovereignty of both nations and maintain cordial relations across the Asian region.
The appeal was signed by 33 major Filipino chambers of commerce and civic organizations.
