The Department of National Defense (DND) said it will stand in solidarity with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), reaffirming the Philippines stance on the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
According to its statement on Monday, the DND emphasized that the Philippines does not seek any conflict or confrontation, but are prepared to act decisively to protect the country’s territory in the face of external threats, particularly with China’s continued presence and activities in the WPS.
DND Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr., was firm in clarifying that the country’s actions are not aggressive but are instead grounded in constitutional duty in protecting its territorial integrity.
Amidst the increasing international attention to maritime disputes in the South China Sea, where the Philippine vessels have repeatedly encountered Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) ships in contested areas, the statement vowed to pursue both peaceful solutions and necessary defense measures as diplomatic efforts of the country.
Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, said in a social media post that the PCG, particularly the BRP Suluan (MRRV 4406) was attacked with a water cannon by the CCG.
