Pangil, one of the Philippines’ largest saltwater crocodiles, died of cancer on January 25, the Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo announced on Thursday evening.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pangil, our beloved flagship animal and one of the largest saltwater crocodiles in the Philippines. After living a long and remarkable life, Pangil peacefully passed away on January 25, 2025, due to complications from metastatic squamous cell carcinoma,” the zoo wrote in its social media post.
For decades, Pangil had been a symbol of strength, wonder, and the rich biodiversity in the country. The Davao Crocodile Park & Zoo considered Pangil as a treasured icon that inspired countless visitors to learn about the beauty and importance of wildlife.
“His incredible presence left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of seeing him, reminding us all of the awe-inspiring creatures that inhabit our world,” they said.
“Pangil’s legacy will forever be etched in the heart of the park and in the lives of the many people he inspired. While we mourn his loss, we find comfort in knowing that he lived a full and meaningful life, serving as a cornerstone of our mission to promote wildlife conservation and awareness,” they added.
The park asked that people honor his memory by continuing to protect and respect the wildlife.
Pangil had a long battle with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. In early 2022, a mass developed on his left hind limb, which led to his cancer diagnosis. Although medication helped minimize the size, the mass continued to grow. In 2024, his doctors said that the cancer came back, and had begun to metastasize.
At the beginning of 2025, Pangil was unable to eat and eventually got weaker. His veterinarian concluded that the crocodile likely succumbed to multi-systematic organ failure, which was secondary to metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.
He was estimated to be 85 years old.
The 18-foot saltwater crocodile was rescued from Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, the same place where Lolong was found.
