The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday raised an El Niño alert in the country.
In a press statement, PAGASA said the alert was based on its forecast that there is an 80 percent probability that El Niño will be experienced from June to August, and will persist until the first quarter of 2024.
"With this development, the PAGASA El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Alert and Warning System is now raised to EL NINO ALERT," it said.
According to the state weather bureau, El Niño is "characterized by unusual warmer than average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) at the central and eastern equatorial Pacific (CEEP). "
PAGASA said the El Niño phenomenon will bring negative effects such as dry spells and droughts caused by the increase of below-normal rainfall conditions.
It advised the public and concerned government agencies to take precautionary measures against the impending impacts of El Niño.
