The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has ordered the relief and preventive suspension of Batangas 1st District Engineer Abelardo Calalo following corruption allegations raised by Congressman Leandro Legarda Leviste.
In a statement, the DPWH assured the public that it does not condone misconduct within its ranks and will fully cooperate with the proper authorities.
“The recent allegations involving a district engineer assigned in Batangas are deeply concerning and are being taken very seriously. As public servants, we at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) do not condone any form of misconduct,” the agency said.
DPWH emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, saying it fully supports the investigation and will implement preventive measures against the officials involved.
“The individual involved will be relieved of his assignment, and preventive suspension will be implemented. We firmly believe that those found to have engaged in any wrongdoing must face the full consequences of their actions in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
The move comes as Rep. Leviste confirmed that his office is set to file a case against Engineer Calalo before the Office of the Batangas Provincial Prosecutor on Tuesday, August 26.
Leviste underscored the need for accountability in the DPWH, calling for projects of better quality and lower cost while obligating contractors to correct deficiencies at no extra expense to the government.
He also vowed to push for broader reforms to address systemic problems within the agency.
