The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) advised on Friday that the facility's emergency room (ER) has already reached full capacity due to a surge in leptospirosis cases.

According to Dr. Romina Danguilan, NKTI’s deputy executive director for medical services, the ER is facing a critical situation with over 120 patients admitted, despite having a maximum capacity of just 60.

The current situation has led to NKTI's staff being overworked and unable to return home, as they are required to continuously monitor patients and administer medication.

Moreover, the Department of Health (DOH) has urged leptospirosis patients to seek treatment in nearby hospitals that can provide similar care as NKTI.
