Despite former President Rodrigo Duterte's arrest for alleged crimes against humanity, the country remains “generally peaceful,” said the Philippine National Police (PNP), even as it vows vigilance to ensure national security.
While several demonstrations have taken place across the country, peace and order have been maintained.
“The PNP reports that the overall peace and order situation across the country remains generally peaceful following the departure of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to The Hague, Netherlands,” the PNP stated, assuring the public of its sustained vigilance.
In an earlier report by RH 52 Edniel Parrosa, the police had already been on “heightened alert” before Duterte’s flight.
However, PNP Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil said police forces will continue to be on standby, particularly in key areas.
“The PNP continues to monitor the situation closely and is fully prepared to respond to any developments. Our personnel have been strategically deployed to ensure peace and security nationwide,” Marbil said.
In Metro Manila, one of these key areas is the EDSA Shrine, where both pro- and anti-Duterte groups will be holding demonstrations. According to DZRH’s patrols, however, the Clergy for Good Governance mass held in remembrance of Drug War victims has been the only event to proceed there.
During Parrosa’s report, Eastern Police and Quezon City Police District (QCPD) officers have been stationed around Ortigas.
