On Tuesday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on the protection and safety of media personnel for the 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE).
The agreement safeguards media workers from violence and harassment, giving the assurance of their safety during the campaign period. It states that anyone who dares to violate the implemented rules will suffer the consequences, as it is now considered an election offense.
A circular on the frequent friction between law enforcers, particularly the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the press was finalized a day before the signing.
They stated that both the media and Comelec are strong pillars of democracy, and therefore must be given assurance that their rights are seen and protected.
Despite the limitations to any constitutional right, they assured that the government's efforts toward reconciliation is a testament of fulfilling one's constitutional responsibility.
With the release of the circular, the signed MOA will take effect by the second week of August.
