The Miss Grand International (MGI) Organization officially revoked Miss Myanmar Thae Su Nyein’s 2nd Runner-Up title following the contender’s meltdown during the pageant’s coronation night on October 25.
In a now-viral clip, Miss Myanmar was seen with tears in her eyes and distressed. Her crown and sash were forcefully removed by the country’s pageant director, whilst she was being guided away by her team. Shortly after, the MGI organization decided to cut ties with Myanmar’s pageant director, citing his “lack of sportsmanship and business credibility.”
In the pageant organization’s official announcement on Monday, October 28, they informed the public of their final decision on the viral incident.
“The Miss Grand International Organization has decided to revoke the title of 2nd Runner-Up from Miss Grand Myanmar 2024, Ms. The Si Nyein due to inappropriate behavior and actions that violated several regulations,” the pageant organization said.
“This announcement is made for your information,” it added.
Consequently, in a Facebook Live, Miss Myanmar said that she will be returning her 2nd Runner-Up crown, adding that it is her own decision to do so.
She also clarified that she is not blaming her fellow contestants for her loss, expressing that she loves India and the Philippines, as they are her “best sister(s) of all time.”
According to Miss Grand Myanmar, they were hoping to get the National Costume and Country Power of the Year award. She recalled seeing her country’s national flag at the venue, adding that most of her supporters were crying.
“I started crying because I feel sorry for them. I feel sad for them not because I don’t get the winning crown. I’m not fighting for the winner's crown, I’m fighting for my country. I’m just competing because I want to show what Burmese people can do,” she said.
Moreover, she clarified the main reason why her pageant director forcibly took her sash and crown. She said that she was about to blackout and fall at the time. She was seen being carried away, as she felt faint.
In a press conference, MGI President Nawat Itsaragrisil questioned Miss Myanmar’s behavior for winning the 2nd Runner-Up.
“If she wants first place and must have it, I suggest she create her own pageant so she can win every title,” Nawat said.
The MGI President officially accepted Miss Myanmar’s decision to reject her 2nd Runner-Up position.
The Miss Grand International 2024 coronation night was held at the MGI Hall in Bangkok, Thailand on October 25. CJ Opiaza from the Philippines bagged the 1st Runner-up position, while Rachel Gupta of India was crowned as Miss Grand International 2024.
