Local governments in Metro Manila are considering banning the practice of reserving parking spaces by physically standing in open slots.
According to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes, Quezon City already has an ordinance against reserving parking spaces in this manner, which other local government units (LGUs) are looking to adopt.
He further stated that the MMDA aims to prevent situations from escalating into conflicts, as seen in a recent viral video showing a woman standing in a parking slot to reserve it for a vehicle reportedly carrying her relatives.
The viral incident took place at a cemetery, where a woman, talking on the phone, was confronted by another woman who shouted at her to vacate the space so her companions could park.
In a press briefing in Pasig, Artes stated that they will be meeting with mall and parking lot owners to implement feasible resolutions to avoid related incidents from occurring.
"Kasi kalimitan doon rin nagaagawan sa mga private parking. So, maganda naman po ang ating relasyon sa mga malls at tingin ko naman po susunod sila. Lalong lalo na kung may ordinansa," said Artes.
It is expected that private parking spaces will be guided by ordinances that will be uniform across Metro Manila.
