Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla revealed that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has already chosen the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The announcement comes just over a week ahead of the scheduled retirement of outgoing PNP Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil.
RH Val Gonzales reported that during an ambush interview, Remulla said he had already discussed the matter with the President.
He further stated that President Marcos had selected a single candidate who is highly qualified and possesses a strong track record. However, the secretary declined to disclose the name for now.
Remulla stated that the identity of the President’s chosen appointee would be announced to the public within the next two weeks.
It is worth noting that alongside Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, other potential candidates to replace Marbil include PNP Deputy Chief for Administration Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. and PNP Chief of Directorial Staff Lt. Gen. Edgar Allan Okubo.
Also being considered is National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin.
Meanwhile, Remulla announced that the 3-minute response policy, which was initially implemented by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), will now be expanded nationwide.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) demonstrated that responding to a crime within three minutes is achievable.
Consequently, the emergency 911 system is set to roll out in Metro Manila, Region IV-A, Region III, Region I, and BARMM starting this July.
Under the unified 911 emergency framework, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and LGUs will be mobilized alongside other agencies to respond to emergencies across all regions of the country.
