Malacañang declares May 3 a regular holiday for Eid'l Fitr
by John Dexter Tilo02 May 2022

Malacañang has declared May 3, Tuesday, a regular holiday in observance of Eid'l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadan.

The order follows the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos to declare the said date as a national holiday, according to the proclamation.

Malacañang said in its statement that declaring May 3 as a regular holiday will "bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid'l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness."

It added that it is also important for Filipinos to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in marking the said event.

"The entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid'l Fitr, subject to the public health measures of the national government," Malacañang said in its proclamation.

Eid'l Fitr on May 2

The announcement follows the declaration of the Islamic advisory council Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta', which said that the Eid'l Fitr will be marked on Monday, May 2.

In an advisory from the Office of the Bangsamoro Mufti, this is because the council sighted the moon-crescent in its moonsighting activity on Sunday evening.

Based on a previous memorandum, the Eid'l Fitr will be marked on May 2 if Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta' sees the moon in its moonsighting activity on May 1.

If not, then Eid'l Fitr will automatically fall on May 3 and May 2 will be "business as usual."
