The Luzon and Visayas grids will be put on red and yellow alert on Wednesday, May 29, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
In its latest advisory, the Luzon grid's red alert will take effect from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
The yellow alert will take effect from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
Luzon Grid's available capacity is 12,680 megawatts, with a peak demand of 12,430 megawatts.
"2 plants have been on forced outage since 2023, 3 between January and March 2024, and 11 power plants between April and May 2024; while 6 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 3,177.3MW unavailable to the grid," said the NGCP.
According to NGCP, factors that contributed to the rise of red and yellow alerts are forced outages and the duration of several plants.
A yellow alert status will also be placed in the Visayas grid, which will take effect from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Visayas' grid's available capacity is 2,890 megawatts, with a peak demand of 2,538 megawatts.
"1 plant has been on forced outage since 2022, 2 since 2023, 1 between January and March 2024, and 14 power plants between April and May 2024; while 10 are running on derated capacities, for a total of 567.4MW unavailable to the grid," said the NGCP.
A red alert status is issued when a power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulatory requirements.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
