The prohibition of tricycles and e-trikes on national highways is for the safety of drivers, Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Vigor Mendoza said on Wednesday, February 7.
“Yung accident rate ever since pag tricycle ang dumadaan ay mabibilis at malalaking sasakyan ang dumadaan tapos sasamahan ng tricycle sa harapan, una ay traffic tapos road safety ang pinaka-importante,” Mendoza told DZRH in an interview.

Mendoza cited the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) memorandum released in December which calls on local government units (LGUs) to prohibit tricycles, pedicabs, and motorized pedicabs on major thoroughfares.
“Merong nilabas ang DILG noong 2020 [yata] na talagang pinagbabawal ang tricycle sa major thoroughfares. Kadalasan ay national road ang pagbabawal, mga kalye na ginawa ng national government,” he said.
The LTO chief noted that these vehicles were being monitored by respective LGUs, adding that they were taking stock of the policy again for road safety purposes.
“Merong sinasabi na dapat sa gilid lang sila. That is monitored with the LGU, minsan wala na sa gilid at nasa gitna na [...] Kasama ang LTO sa panghuhuli. Pero sa lawak ng lugar, ang first responders ay LGUs,” Mendoza said.
“Marami na kaya we are taking a review of all this policy again, inter-agency na 'yan para magkaroon ng panibagong panukala. Lahat ay nirerepaso natin para sa road safety issues,” he added.
