Presidential aspirant Ka Leody de Guzman on Friday said he is not in favor of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's proposal of mandatory military enlistment in the country, saying there's no reason for it.
"Hindi ko gagawin 'yan (mandatory military enlistment). Hindi tayo at war, hindi tulad ng South Korea," de Guzman said during the KBP presidential candidates forum.
"At isa pa, hindi ako sang-ayon sa paraan ng giyera o baril, pagpatay, walang mananalo diyan. ang mananalo diyan 'yung malalaking kapitalista na gumagawa ng bala at armas," he added.
Ka Leody also noted that he was not surprised by the proposal of Duterte-Caprio, who is running for vice president in the upcoming polls.
"Hindi ako nagtataka kay Mayor Sara. Eh kung ano ang puno, iyong din ang bunga kaya ganyan siya," he said.
During a virtual caravan, Duterte-Carpio said that she would use her position as vice president to talk to lawmakers and make military service mandatory for people aged 18 years old.
This is similar to the initial proposal of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, who wanted to make the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps mandatory again in 2019.
Instead, Ka Leody said the government should focus more on the country's problem with climate change and global warming.
