A Korean airplane has overshot at the runway of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) on Sunday night, Oct. 23.

In a statement, the MCIA management confirmed that Korean Air flight no. KE631 arriving from Incheon in South Korea at around 11 pm overran the runway during landing attempt due to bad weather.

A total of 162 passengers and 11 crew onboard the A330 aircraft were reported safe and no one was injured.

“The incident has necessitated the temporary closure of the MCIA runway to allow for the safe removal of the aircraft,“ the management said.

All domestic and international flights of MCIA were canceled until further notice.

Passengers with flights to and from MCIA were advised to coordinate with their respective airlines.

Meanwhile, Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople said in a Twitter post that she has directed the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to assist Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were affected by flight cancelations.

Korean Air President Keehong Woo released a statement on Monday apologizing for the incident.

Woo said local aviation authorities and Korean authorities would conduct a thorough investigation to determine the main causes of the incident.

“We always prioritize safety in all of our operations, and we truly regret the stress and inconvenience brought to our passengers,“ he said.

Woo asserted that they remain committed to its pledge of safe operation. He vowed that they would do their best to implement measures to prevent recurrence of such incident in the future.

“Our overall goal is for our valued guests to trust that Korean air will treat them well, and honor us with the opportunity to welcome them once again,“ he added.
