President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed belief on Tuesday that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte would carry over into the 20th Congress.
"It is very clear that it will because there’s no way, even if they start the trial now, that they will finish it before the new Senators come in," Marcos said in a media interview at Kalayaan Hall, Malacañang.
"So, well again, the Senators will decide," he added.
Notably, the 19th Congress is set to adjourn on June 30.
Marcos said he is leaving the impeachment proceedings to the Senate, emphasizing that it is primarily the Senate’s responsibility and that they are closely monitoring the developments.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday took his oath as the presiding officer of the impeachment court in the trial of Vice President Duterte.
The oath-taking took place after extended plenary discussions, which were initiated by a motion from the Senate minority bloc calling for the start of the impeachment trial's opening rites.
Senators will take their oath as impeachment court judges at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, with the Senate scheduled to convene as an impeachment court on Wednesday.
