The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday confirmed that former President Rodrigo Duterte is currently in their custody at the detention center in Scheveningen.
"Duterte is under ICC custody at the ICC detention centre in Schevenigen. He was admitted today following all medical checks," ICC Spokesperson Fadi El Abdallah said in a message to the media.
He also stated that, as a standard practice, the court takes steps to ensure the health and well-being of a suspect upon their arrival in custody.
The ICC will release the schedule for Duterte's initial appearance at an appropriate time.
"We recall the importance of respecting the integrity of the judicial process," the Court added.
This clarification comes after statements from one of Duterte's legal counsels, former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, who claimed they were unaware of Duterte's whereabouts and had been informed that he was not in the facility.
Duterte will remain detained at the ICC's detention facility while facing charges of crimes against humanity related to the implementation of his anti-illegal drug campaign during his administration, which resulted in thousands of reported killings.
The former President was arrested on Tuesday upon his arrival in Manila from Hong Kong at NAIA Terminal 3.
He was then taken into government custody at Villamor Air Base, where he stayed before being flown to The Hague in the Netherlands to face trial for the charges against him.
Malacañang previously disclosed that just hours before Duterte's arrival in the country, Interpol Manila received the official copy of the ICC warrant, prompting the Prosecutor General of the Department of Justice to take action and enforce it.
