Several drowning incidents had been reported in different areas in the country since the Summer season officially kicked off.
From April 1 to April 10 alone, the Philippine National Police (PNP) logged a total of 80 deaths due to drowning. Most of the incidents were reported in Calabarzon, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and Bicol Region.
With this alarming number, every one of us should know the important steps to save a friend, members of your family, or any person if the need arises.
If you are on a Summer outing with family and friends and you see that someone is near drowning, here are five important steps from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) that you need to keep in mind.
1. Check the drowning person's breathing
Tilt the person's head back and check their breathing. If you feel that the person is not breathing, follow the next steps.
2. Call PRC's emergency hotline at 143
Dial or ask someone to call the PRC emergency hotline at 143.
3. Apply 30 chest compressions
Push firmly the middle of the person's chest then release and repeat this for 30 times.
4. Rescue breaths
Tilt the individual's head back then seal your mouth over their mouth and then blow. Repeat this twice.
5. Continue compressions and rescue breaths
Continue the 30 chest compressions and rescue breaths until the help arrives.
