The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has cautioned the public about the risk of heat-related emergencies, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as Metro Manila braces for an expected high heat index.

According to PRC, the heat-related emergencies can occur when prolonged exposure to high temperatures disrupts the body’s natural temperature regulation system.

"When the body cannot effectively dissipate the excessive heat, its temperature rises, leading to an emergency," the PRC explained.

Those at risk include children, the elderly, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and outdoor workers.

The public, particularly those at higher risk, is urged to stay hydrated by drinking water, avoid sugary beverages, remain in air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Likewise, if heat exhaustion occurs, the patient should be moved to a cooler area, have water sprayed on their skin, and be given an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to drink.

The following first aid measures are provided by the PRC:

  • Dial Red Cross 143
  • Move the patient to a cooler area
  • Spray water on the skin
  • Immerse the patient in circulating water

According to a previous forecast by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA), the heat index could climb as high as 46°C today, March 3.

This has prompted several Local Government Units (LGUs) in Metro Manila to announce the cancellation of face-to-face classes in schools due to the anticipated high heat index in the region.
