A House of Representatives committee is up to investigate Sonshine Media Network Inc. (SMNI) over a misinformation report regarding Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez’s travel fund, which costs P1.8 billion.
Following the privilege speech made by Quezon Representative David Suarez, Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto filed a motion to investigate the incorrect information that SMNI reported on air, and the inquiry is set for November 30.
Suarez called SMNI’s report on Romualdez’s alleged funds ‘fake news,’ calling for a legislative inquiry on the matter as part of the House Committee Legislative Franchises’ oversight function.
According to Suarez, the report released by the SMNI is a form of ‘fake news,’ showing no proof of claims and demanding immediate retraction and an apology for spreading incorrect information.
He added that they are also exploring options to hold them accountable for the campaign, requesting an immediate investigation into the matter as soon as possible for transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, the Speaker’s alleged P1.8 billion travel fund could be meant to mislead the public and put a stain on Romualdez’s reputation as well as that of the House of Representatives.
